Raising and Educating Girls

“The promise of equality is not equality...men run the world.”

These jarring words were delivered by Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg during a 2011 Barnard College graduation address.* I shared highlights from this address and some equally startling facts from a 2011 Princeton study during our May 5th Raising and Educating Girls parents’ breakfast on the Hilltop. We gathered to focus on the challenges still facing girls and women in the 21st century. As Sandberg and the Princeton study make clear, even in the most “advanced” countries and on the most "enlightened" campuses, females continue to experience significantly lower levels of economic success than males and occupy an alarmingly low percentage of leadership positions across the world.

Joining me at the breakfast were two truly wonderful individuals with extensive backgrounds in education: Connecticut Association of Independent Schools President, Dr. Doug Lyons and Head of Westover School, Ms. Ann Pollina. (See breakfast flyer for bios). Sixty St. Luke's parents attended what turned out to be a stimulating and, occasionally, emotional event.

*This just in and highly relevant: Today President Obama gave the graduation address at Barnard and urged women to take their seats at "the head of the table."
