For the hard-working, talented, and ambitious students of St. Luke's, notification of college admissions during the senior year is often a culminating moment. The college counseling process at St. Luke's School is designed to ensure, to the extent possible, that it is an affirming moment as well—with good news heard by all. The process is specifically structured to meet all of the counseling needs of our students as those emerge over time, beginning as early as the freshman year, and for this reason our families never have to retain the services of an independent college counselor. In short, our counseling process is comprehensive, proactive, and individualized.

The Class of 2008 has caused everyone to sit up and take notice.   The percent of seniors accepted by elite colleges this year was significantly higher than that of any class in the last thirty—with over half admitted to colleges categorized by Barron’s Profiles of American Colleges as “most selective,” a group that on average accepts about one quarter of those applying.  Another 30% gained admissions to “highly selective” institutions, the second level group that typically admits approximately a third of their applicants.  That seems odd, though tremendously gratifying, given the recent round of news stories about this being the most competitive year ever for college admissions at the top end, where the leading indicator is Harvard’s stingy 7% admit rate.  How, then, did more than 80% of this year’s graduating class gain favorable notice from hard-to-impress admissions officers at pinnacle colleges?
