An Afternoon of Sonnets & Sweets

V. Parker
On Thursday afternoon, the Shakespeare Honors Seminar students filled English teacher Susan Doran’s living room for the 19th Annual Sonnets and Sweets Showcase. Each of the 16 seniors memorized and recited a sonnet before their classmates and teacher. US English Chair Steve Flachsbart and English teacher Ross James not only joined the audience but also participated by respectively reciting an Italian sonnet and original poems. Everyone was rewarded with tasty homemade treats thanks to Mrs. Doran. As Grace Cashman '17 shared afterwards, "This was such an emotionally and intellectually stimulating class. We read great plays, have great conversation, and have a lot of fun debating all the different nuances of Shakespeare's characters, and the relevance to today's world.”
