This course will mix instruction, guided practice, motivating activities, and an introduction to tournament play.  The instructor, Alvin Hamilton, has been playing chess for over half a century and is a B-rated United States Chess Federation member as well as a certified tournament director.  He has taught hundreds of people to play the game and directed many tournaments. Locally, he founded the Danbury Area Scholastic Chess League over 30 years ago and served as its president for over 15 years.

Victory isn’t everything, it is the only thing. - Red Saunders

Chess is a game of will versus will, and savoring a victory is sweet.  Despite Saunders’ thoughts on the matter, being gracious in victory and defeat is sweeter still.  As a player advances, it is important to cultivate an equanimity that will accept any result and a disposition to learn from mistakes.

In this course, students will learn to be self-critical and extend their knowledge of the game beyond the basics.  Strategy and tactics discussions will be coupled with targeted practice and a fair dose of fun!
