Softball Completes FAA and WNEPSA Double
The St. Luke’s Softball team completed a remarkable season by winning the Fairchester Athletic Association (FAA) Tournament title and the Western New England Preparatory Schools Association (WNEPSA) Class C Championship.
The FAA playoff run began with a 7-3 victory over Greens Farms Academy in the quarterfinals on Tuesday, May 14, at St. Luke’s.
The team then traveled to Hopkins School on Wednesday, May 15, for a repeat of the 2017 and 2018 finals. After falling behind 1-4 early in the game, the St. Luke’s bats came alive in the top of the fifth. The Storm blasted nine runs in the inning to take a 10-4 lead that it would not relinquish.
The Hilltoppers hit back in the bottom of the fifth to make it 10-7, but the Storm tagged on five more runs in the top of the seventh to claim the win and progress to the championship game.
Holy Child hosted the final, and, once again, SLS found themselves behind early in the game before another huge fifth inning. Trailing 1-2, multiple hitters combined to earn seven runs and turn the game on its head. Riley Page ‘19 went three for four with a walk, Emma Cropper ‘19 went two for three with a walk, and Raven Sead ‘20 went two for three with a walk.
Although the Gryphons added one more run in the bottom of the sixth, clutch pitching from Page gave the Storm its second straight tournament title with an 8-3 final.
St. Luke’s Varsity Softball had little time to enjoy the victory, as the team traveled to Harvey School on Saturday, May 18, to defend its WNEPSA Class C Championship title. The confidence gained from the FAA triumph was visible as the Storm secured a place in Sunday’s final with a comprehensive 11-0 win in five innings.
St. Luke’s made it five WNEPSA Championships in a row with a huge 16-2 win against Forman School at Litchfield High School. In her final time at the mound for St. Luke’s, Page pitched another outstanding game to help the Storm cap off another fantastic year. Kendall Boege ‘19 went three for five with two RBI’s. Page went two for three with two walks, Maddie Sead ‘19 went three for five with three RBI’s, and Shannon Rust ‘22 went three for four with one RBI.
