2021 Edward Scovner MS Teaching Award

S.A.
Congratulations to Ty Wieland, the 2021 Edward Scovner Excellence in Middle School Teaching Award recipient. This award is given to a Middle School teacher who inspires students to fulfill their potential, demonstrates a deep commitment to and affection for students, and possesses a distinctive style and approach to teaching. Mr. Wieland, St. Luke’s Sixth Grade English teacher, will teach eighth grade next year.

Head of Middle School Amber Berry shared the following about Wieland during the Middle School Awards Ceremony held on June 7, in the Wyckoff Family Black Box Theater.

“This year’s Ed Scovner recipient goes to a faculty member who demonstrates professionalism every day. They are organized and ready to engage their students. They are not afraid to try new technological tools and create lessons that balance fun and focus. Students feel supported and encouraged in this teacher’s classroom. Students are growing and stretching and not afraid to take risks. As a colleague, this teacher is a standout in both listening and responsiveness. Whether helping direct shows, working technical theater, or perhaps (most recently) peeling out in the parking lot! ... You can count on this teacher to get creatively involved at every level to ensure that the show is executed to perfection.”

Past recipients of the Edward Scovner Excellence in Middle School Teaching Award include: math teach Jay Blau (2020), former English teacher Frank “Bubba” Henson ‘74 (2019), physical education teacher Pat Raffaele ’88 (2018), Middle School Science Chair Susan Bralower (2017), math teacher Susan Garnett (2016), science teacher David Havens (2015), English teacher Jim Carroll (2014), and fifth grade teacher Melissa Zurkowski (2013).
