Holiday Service Opportunities

By: Kate Parker-Burgard, Center for Leadership Director
As we move through this festive season, St. Luke’s families often look for ways to make this time of year more meaningful. We encourage you to embrace the season of giving by reaching out to neighbors and helping to make other peoples’ holidays merry and bright.
Here are a few suggestions:

Donate to a favorite nonprofit in honor of someone — this can be one of the most meaningful gifts to give to loved ones.
  • Volunteer at the DOMUS Holiday Mall on Saturday, Dec. 18. They need help all day.
  • Join other SLS students to pack bags at Filling in the Blanks on Tuesday, Dec. 21. Sign up here. You can also join St. Luke’s for another packing event on Saturday, Jan. 8, from 9:30-11:30 am. Please sign up here for the January event.
  • Make holiday cards for workers at nonprofits. Nonprofit employees work tirelessly but often don’t receive the appreciation they deserve. Here are some suggestions for how you might wish them well and spread some holiday cheer.
  • Volunteer at Bridgeport Rescue Mission, which offers several opportunities to lend your support during Winter Break and throughout the year. Click here for more information on how you can help.
  • Bake cookies and deliver them to your local police, fire, or ambulance teams. (Be sure to call your local municipalities before baking to learn about any restrictions on donations.)
  • Serve holiday dinner at the Open Doors Shelter on Thursday, Dec. 23. Volunteer for setting up, serving, cleaning, playing games, or bringing desserts. The holiday dinner helps bring love, cheer, and full stomachs to people who are food insecure or homeless. Families are welcome to participate together. Please click here for more information.
