Mind Matters Club Hosts Youth Mental Health Project’s Executive Director

By: Macy Millones ‘23
On January 21, the Mind Matters Club was joined virtually by Valerie Barton, the Executive Director of the Youth Mental Health Project

The Youth Mental Health Project aims to “educate, empower, and support families and communities to better understand and care for the mental health of our youth.” Ms. Barton spoke about the importance of relationships between parents and their children regarding mental health. She addressed her concerns about the global state of mental health as we enter another year of the pandemic and live in unprecedented times.

Among many wise remarks, Ms. Barton shared a piece of advice that she was given and found particularly powerful: “Don’t compare your insides to others' outsides.” This quote speaks to the importance of not invalidating your own struggles by comparing them to what others are projecting, because chances are it’s not a reflection of how others are really doing on the inside. Therefore, it is paramount to check in on one another and engage in healthy conversation.

We are so grateful to have had the opportunity to hear from Ms. Barton, and we look forward to bringing these meaningful conversations to the Hilltop as the year continues.
