Boys & Girls Soccer Clinch FAA Titles

Daniel Clarke
Friday, Oct, 28, proved to be a historical day for St. Luke’s soccer, when both the boys and girls teams clinched the Fairchester Athletic Association (FAA) regular season titles.

The girls soccer team traveled to Greenwich Academy for a rematch of last season’s tournament final. The two teams faced each other knowing that the winner would earn the regular-season title and secure first place in the upcoming FAA tournament.

In a physical match, the Storm produced a moment of magic with just 10 seconds remaining in the game. In what would be the final play of the game, Lena Olbrys ’25 sent in a perfect corner kick for Camdyn Nelson ’25 to head home.

Head Coach Dan Clarke was thrilled with his team's effort and excited to win another FAA title: “It was a tremendous effort from the girls against a tough GA team. One of our goals again this year was to win the regular-season title, and this outstanding group of players delivered. While we left it extremely late in the match, the goal for the win had a real quality to it.”

While the girls game was taking place in Greenwich, St. Luke’s boys varsity soccer hosted Masters School (New York), knowing a win would clinch at least a share of the FAA title.

In a very close contest, neither team could find a breakthrough in the first half and were locked at 0-0 after the first 45 minutes. Things continued in much the same way at the start of the second half until Peter Lewis ’24 scored a scrappy goal to make it 1-0, St. Luke’s, with 25 minutes remaining in the match.

The two teams continued to go back and forth until Javier Minuesa ’25 secured the Storm’s victory with 10 minutes to play in the match. The mercurial sophomore timed his run to perfection and scored a wonderful header from Watson Meyer’s ’24 corner kick.

The St. Luke’s boys varsity soccer team deserved the win and was able to celebrate clinching its first outright FAA regular season title since 2009, after hearing the news that Greens Farms Academy beat Greenwich Country Day School.

Head Coach Ryan Fairhurt was extremely proud of his players: “I’m delighted for the group. At the start of October, when we were 1-2 in FAA play, I’m not sure any of us thought this would be possible. However, the team regained its focus, stuck to its principles of play, and did not look back. To go into such a big game and produce a performance like that shows how this team has grown mentally and can perform in the upcoming play-off games..”

The girls team hosts Greenwich Country Day School in the quarterfinals of the FAA Tournament on Tuesday, Nov. 8.

The boys team gets a bye for Wednesday’s semifinal and will host the winner of the Greenwich Country Day School vs. King School matchup.
