Susan Bralower Receives Edward Scovner Excellence in Middle School Teaching Award

V. Parker
Middle School Science Chair Susan Bralower was the 2017 recipient of the Edward Scovner Excellence in Middle School Teaching Award. This award goes to a Middle School teacher who inspires students to fulfill their potential. This teacher must demonstrate a deep commitment and affection for students, and most importantly, has a distinctive style and approach to teaching.

Head of the Middle School Gareth Fancher shared this about Bralower when she received the award:

“Thoughtful, caring, straight-forward, demanding, organized, innovative, creative, ready and willing to solve problems when needed ... this award goes to an inspiring teacher and an exceptional instructional leader. Reimagining the course curriculum, while bringing in exciting new programs embracing project-based learning, this teacher constantly pushes herself to think deeper, try new things, and provide an enriching 'best in class' experience for her students. In addition she has gone above and beyond, taking on leadership roles with her grade level team, spearheading the X-Ploration units and organizing 'end-of-year' experiences for the class. Moreover, she is always ready to lead the charge with the next new idea floating in our midst. All Middle Schoolers enjoy her annual Mystery Box Challenge, and our soon to be Upper Schoolers revel in the memories of their Middle School years thanks to her efforts in coordinating the 8th grade Facebook and Promotion Ceremony video. With confidence, empathy, keen insight, and a no-nonsense approach, she is always available to students, parents, and colleagues alike. She knows not the meaning of the word 'impossible' and her 'can-do' attitude significantly energizes our Middle School program each and every day."

Past recipients of the Edward Scovner Excellence in Middle School Teaching Award include math teacher Susan Garnett (2016), science teacher David Havens (2015), English teacher Jim Carroll (2014) and 5th grade teacher Melissa Zurkowski (2013).
