What's Happening in the Middle School?

Life as a Teacher on an Indian Reservation

For the fifth year in a row, Head of Upper School Liz Perry met with St. Luke’s 8th graders to share her experiences teaching Lakota students on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota in the 1990s. This annual talk is part of the introduction to the novel The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian.

Middle School English teacher Jim Carroll shared, “The students receive important insights from a prominent member of their own community about Native American lives and education. When they see how Ms. Perry is still emotionally impacted by her time working at that Reservation school, their understanding of the issues and struggles that we encounter in the book is deepened, and their empathy for that segment of our society increases.”
