What's Happening in the Middle School?

Fifth Grade Community Connection

V.Parker
During the first two days of school, St. Luke’s fifth graders participated in a series of fun, thought-provoking activities to help them make and build connections. It was a great jumpstart to the school year, as it ties into St. Luke’s fifth grade’s overall theme of community.

Lively team-building games were played outside, including “Flickin’ Chickens” and a challenging “Golf Balls and Gutters” race. Middle School Art Chair Nancy Sarno led the students in an art project that was designed to help them express their understanding of friendship and connect to their summer read, Operation Frog Effect, by Sarah Scheerger.

Armed with blank floor plans, the fifth graders also traveled around the school in small treasure hunt teams to search and discover spaces throughout the building. They also completed a fill-in-the-blanks form about St. Luke’s that required them to sleuth around the school for answers.

Head of School Mark Davis and Head of Middle School Amber Berry each visited the students to discuss the meaning of the word “community,” especially as it pertains to St. Luke’s, and the ways people can contribute to and build community. As a final activity in their small teams, all students composed wrote metaphor poems to show what they had learned about their new community on the Hilltop. As fifth grade teacher Jane Olsen shared, “The members of the class of 2027 are surely well-launched on their learning journey at St. Luke’s.”
