Fifth Grade Nature Adventure

VGP
From Fifth Grade Teacher Jane Olsen:

On Friday, September 20, St. Luke’s fifth graders went on their annual outing to Ward Pound Ridge Reservation, where they picnicked, hiked, and conducted research activities.

On a day of glorious sunshine, the students hiked two miles along the Cross River, taking photos of plants, animals, and other natural artifacts along the trail. They also had a picnic lunch and time to play at Kimberly Bridge, before visiting the Trailside Museum. At the Museum, they sampled exhibits on a wide range of scientific and historical topics, including trail cams with beavers and black bears, the story of the Leatherman, a Delaware Long House, and a fabulous Augmented Reality Sandbox.

After their return to school, the students have been posting their pictures as observations on the Citizen Science database iNaturalist, finding identifications for the plants and animals (and even IDs for bear prints and beaver "scat"), and creating trail maps that mark the locations of all they found.
