What's Happening in the Middle School?

Eighth Grader Reflects on Model UN

From Middle School History Dept. Chair Chris Phelps:

St. Luke’s Middle School Model UN had 16 eighth graders representing eight countries, the Philippines, Haiti, Denmark, Angola, Uzbekistan, South Africa, Nicaragua, and the Republic of Korea at the World Health Organization conference on Malnutrition. The conference took place at the Pan American Health Organization headquarters in Washington, D.C., where the kids had meaningful discussions on the issue of global malnutrition.

St. Luke’s 8th grade student Nicole Perez shared the following reflection on this recent Middle School Model UN event:

When we got to the conference, the first thing all of us noticed was how young some of the kids were. There was a decent number of kids from a local elementary school. These kids were so smart, and all of us were amazed that they chose to start this at such a young age. When the conference began, we took roll call.  We watched the speakers list get chosen and eventually heard all the kids deliver an entire speech. Everyone spoke so confidently in front of almost 300 people who were sitting in the assembly hall. The majority of people from our school worked together with other schools to combine our resolutions and come up with one very good one that solved the problem presented to us.
