What's Happening in the Middle School?
Seventh Grade PIE Night a Huge Success!
At the end of November, seventh-grade students held their annual PIE Night—the capstone presentation of a weekslong scientific exploration into topics of their choosing.
Rachel Lang, St. Luke’s Seventh-grade Science Teacher, shared the following about this year’s event.
For several weeks, our students moved through each step of the Scientific Inquiry Process, from brainstorming to topic selection. Students then explored and collected data related to their scientific questions. What made this year unique is that in place of an in-person event, we held our first-ever virtual PIE night. Students recorded their presentations, and the videos were added to a gallery of all seventh-grade projects. After the site was complete, students were encouraged to watch their classmates’ presentations and leave comments to show their support.

For me, what made this PIE Night special is how many different groups of people came together to make the event possible. Jean Myles, our School Librarian, helped the students with research. The Technology Team spoke to our kids about how to record on Zoom and created the gallery website. The Center for Leadership team talked to the students about how to deliver a dynamic presentation, even in the digital world. This project wouldn't have been possible without these groups and individuals. Thank you!
I had a great deal of fun guiding the seventh graders in their journey from wondering to discovery and was equally entertained by their results. I am so proud of the way they stepped up to overcome unforeseen challenges. I can't wait to do this project again next year.
