Top Turnout of MS Student Council Candidates

V. Parker
St. Luke’s Middle School Student Council elections had the largest turnout ever with 42 candidates running (with fifteen of them going from the president, secretary or treasurer position). Student Council Advisor Sarah Westerberg said, “We’re going old school to the way our nation first elected the vice president by giving the position to the presidential runner-up.”

Students interested had to fill out an "intent to run" form explaining why they wanted to run and their qualifications. Every candidate had to attend a campaign workshop in which they learned about the election process, campaign speech writing, tips and tricks with an audience, and guidelines for campaign materials.

This week, the executive candidates gave speeches to the entire Middle School and the presidential candidates participated in a Q&A moderated by Westerberg. Candidates for class representatives will speak at class meetings next week.
