St. Luke’s varsity teams enjoyed a perfect Homecoming with victories in all five games played on Saturday, October 21.
The beautiful fall day began with Varsity Field Hockey hosting Cheshire Academy at Pedrick Stadium. The Storm jumped out to a 2-0 lead with goals from Kendall Boege ‘19 at 18:35 and 11:20. Despite some second-half pressure from the Fighting Cats, St. Luke’s saw the game out 2-1 to put the first win of the day on the board.
Girls Varsity Soccer and Varsity Volleyball were next in action with both teams making light work of their FAA opponents.
GVS hosted Holy Child School on the Class of 2015 field and controlled the contest from start to finish. Senior captain Elizabeth Laub scored with a thumping header after just four minutes from an Ali Gall ‘22 corner to set the tone of the game. Lea Panagiotidis ‘20 doubled the lead just before halftime scoring a penalty after Caroline Lau ‘22 had been taken down inside the box.
Laub would make it 3-0 with her second goal of the game minutes after the interval and Elli O’Meara ‘22 scored her first career varsity goal to wrap up an impressive 4-0 victory.
As GVS were enjoying the sunshine, the Varsity Volleyball team was putting in a dominant display against Greens Farms Academy inside Carey Gymnasium. The Storm raced into a two-set lead with some excellent serving from Courteney Newman ‘18 and powerful kills by Bridget Dalton ‘18 and Emma Castiglione ‘18.
They completed the 3-0 sweep to improve to 7-3 on the season with some strong leadership from captains Dalton and Maria Minuesa ‘18.
With all three girls teams winning the pressure was on for Boys Varsity Soccer as they faced another FAA rival in The King School.
In a game dominated by defense the Storm had to wait until the 83rd minute to find the breakthrough. Phil Platek ‘20 calmly slotted home into the bottom right corner after a wonderful pass by Julian Velez ‘20 to give BVS a 1-0 advantage in front of an exuberant crowd.
In a nervy final seven minutes goalkeeper and senior captain Ryan Neafesy, along with his backline of Chase Zammit ‘18, Bear Crystal ‘20, Dominic DeMarco ‘18 and CJ Woodberry ‘19, held strong to continue the homecoming winning streak.
The final game of the day saw Varsity Football take on Long Island Lutheran at Pedrick Stadium. In front of a partisan crowd the Storm capped off the perfect day with a dominant 44-20 victory.
St. Luke’s were quickly 7-0 up when Ben Joseph ‘18 ran 28 yards for a touchdown and Andrew Lau ‘20 added the extra point with 7:44 to play in the first quarter.
The Storm extended the lead to 13-0 with 2:59 to play in the first quarter when Kenny Soares ‘21 intercepted a pass and returned it 50 yards to the LI Lutheran 20-yard line. Shaka Moles ‘18 took the handoff from Michael Hage ‘19 and sprinted down the left side and into the end zone.
Hage found Moales again early in the second quarter with a 49-yard touchdown pass and the Storm completed a two-point conversion to give them a 21-0 lead.
Further touchdowns from Joseph and Chandler Greene ‘19 gave St. Luke’s a commanding 34-14 halftime advantage.
Hage again found Moales with a 47-yard completion early in the third quarter to set up Greene for his second touchdown of the game with a 1-yard run into the end zone. Lau then added 23-yard field goal with 1:24 in the third quarter to complete the St. Luke’s scoring and cap off a wonderful Homecoming on the Hilltop.
