Vive le Français à St. Luke's!

V. Parker
St. Luke’s, along with many schools around the country, celebrated National French Week this week. This has been an annual tradition on the Hilltop for two decades.

Middle School French students made colorful, graphic word cloud posters and table-tents to help others learn easily recognizable French words. Upper School French students created informative posters with fun and informative facts about the two dozen African countries where French is a major language. These posters and table-tents were displayed throughout the Dining Commons. Flik also participated with authentic French-inspired dishes all week long. There were even French-language cartoons and films shown during lunch.

Upper School World Language Chair Jon Shee and French teacher Evan Downey helped kick off the week with a presentation at Monday’s US Town Meeting. Shee said, “Some of the little-known facts we shared included that by 2050, French will be the 3rd most spoken language on Earth, and that Forbes magazine rates French the 2nd most useful language for business, after English.”

The St. Luke’s French Program has earned the highest rank for French programs in the country from the American Association of Teachers of French continuously since 2015.
