Romeo & Juliet Reimagined

V. Parker
LaRita Hamilton’s 9th grade Honors English students were recently visited by Valerie Jensen and Kristopher Mann who shared their experiences of working on a short film adaptation of Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet exclusively featuring adults with disabilities. Mann starred as Romeo and Jensen wrote and directed this production in response to people who didn't think that adults with disabilities were capable of performing Shakespeare.

Jensen and Mann offered advice on adapting scenes and making Shakespeare accessible to all audiences. This was helpful to the students as they prepare their own scenes from Romeo & Juliet. Hamilton shared, “Shakespeare can be intimidating to some people, but his plays always give people something to discuss.” She continued, “Our visitors let the students see one of the many ways Shakespeare’s works can be interpreted. I’m so glad they had this opportunity.”
