Jack Maguire Golfs Above and Beyond

Dan Clarke
St. Luke’s golfer Jack Maguire ‘19 recently completed his American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) Leadership Links Charity Drive and was one of the top AJGA fundraisers for 2017.

Maguire raised a total of $14,786 during his “Birdies for Charity” campaign. As one of the top eight fundraisers from across the country, he got to travel to Florida to play golf with Rickie Fowler.

The Ridgefield resident exceeded his original target of $10,000 to help raise money for the Alzheimer’s Association and the ACE Grant Program which gives financial assistance to junior golfers who aspire to earn a college golf scholarship.

Maguire said: “I chose to raise money for the Alzheimer’s Association as the disease has affected members of my extended family. I have seen the impact firsthand so it became a personal way to make a difference.”

The St. Luke’s junior raised the money largely through the generosity of family and friends who donated to the foundation every time he birdied or eagled a hole in competition. Maguire averaged 3.2 per round for a total of 76 birdies over the course of his competitive rounds.

On the experience of playing with the number seven golfer in the world, Maguire added: “It was  an awesome experience. Rickie was super inspirational and a really nice guy. He had some fun conversations with us and we got to pick his brain a little bit. To be able to see him up close, the things he does and how his mind works on the golf course, really gave me a deeper understanding of what it takes to get to that level.”

The money will be split between the two charities with $8,893 going to the Alzheimer’s Association and $5,893 to the ACE Grant Program. Maguire is proud to be going above and beyond: “I feel lucky to be able to devote so much of my time and energy to the game of golf. If I can be working towards giving back at the same time, that is truly a blessing.”
