Storm Defends Tip-Off Title
The St. Luke’s Girls Varsity Basketball team traveled to Pittsfield, MA, this weekend for the Miss Hall’s Tip-Off Classic looking to defend the title it won last year. The Storm didn’t disappoint as it blew away the opposition to win its second straight championship and continue its undefeated start to the season.
St. Luke's defeated Vermont Academy in the first round on Saturday, December 2 by a final score of 73-56. The Storm took some hot shooting into the break but VA was able to hit some shots of their own to keep the score 36-31 at halftime. The Wildcats battled hard in the second half but the pace of the SLS team proved to be too much as they pulled away with Maya Klein '18 top scoring with 20 points and Caroline Lau '22 adding 18 points.
St. Luke's stormed out of the gates in its second game on Saturday night and raced into an early lead against The Watkinson School. The Rams struggled to get back into the game after getting in an early hole and SLS rode a terrific defensive effort to lead 39-20 at the break. The formula of strong defense, sharing the basketball and moving it quickly on offense continued as the Storm went on to win 81-48.
St. Luke's was led offensively by McKenna Frank '18 who scored 21 points, Maya Klein added 17, Janelle Johnson '20 scored 11 points and Sydney Cummings '19 added eight points.
The Storm made light work of The St. George’s School in the championship matchup on Sunday, December 3 winning by a final score of 70-39.
St. Luke’s took a little while to find its rhythm but once a few shots landed midway through the first half the team rolled to a 43-15 lead at the break. Hot shooting from Maya Klein and Johnson '20 was key and the pace of Lau was a constant problem for the Dragons.
Riley Page '19, Cummings and Jada Boggs '19 did a great job on the boards for the Storm with Klein and Johnson leading the way with 19 points each. Frank added eight points and Lau '22 scored seven to go with multiple assists.
Next Up: St. Luke’s Girls Varsity Basketball host Wilton High School in a scrimmage on Friday, December 8 before a rematch of last year’s NEPSAC Class C quarterfinal on Saturday, December 9 against Beaver Country Day School.
