Girls Varsity Squash: Season Preview

Dan Clarke
The St. Luke’s Girls Varsity Squash team is looking forward to another season on the court. The vast majority of last year’s team returned once again this winter.

The 2016-17 campaign was a huge success, culminating in the team finishing as runners-up in Division III at The Head 2017 High School Team Championships.

Lucia Mathias returns for her third year as head coach. She’s excited to see what this year’s group can achieve: “Our preseason is really about what we do at the club level and we have had great participation on the girls’ side. That’s really encouraging and everyone has been working hard to get in shape to make sure they are ready for the season.”

GVS will be captained by Caroline Nevin ‘18 and Pamela Jaramillo ‘19 and Mathias expects the pair to show strong leadership: “It is sad that this is Caroline’s last year with the program as she always gives so much and leads by example. Pamela just keeps getting better and better and that comes down to her hard work and dedication and I hope the team can learn from that.”

There are some new faces to the 14-strong squad and the head coach has been impressed with what she has seen so far: “I am very happy with the talent level of some of our new players. Victoria Whitcomb (‘20), Amelia Heffern (‘21) and Ryan Weil (‘21) have all come in and are picking things up extremely quickly due to their energy and effort.”

This year’s number one spot will again be the responsibility of Caroline Pellegrino ‘21 and Mathias is hopeful that the freshman will have another strong season: “I have high expectations of Caroline. She has been extremely impressive this year competing very well against Dennis Polyakov (‘18), the Boys number one, so hopefully she can continue that form throughout the winter.”

According to Mathias, there is very little to separate the girls in terms of ability. That is something she hopes will benefit the team over the course of the season: “I have seen a lot of improvement from a number of the girls compared to last year. The middle of our ladder to the bottom is very strong. I am really excited to see what we can achieve.”

The Girls Varsity Squash team traveled to Squash Haven on Monday, December 4 and, despite losing to a very talented team, competed very well in the first match of the season.

Next up: The squad’s home opener is on Monday, December 11 against New Canaan High School at 4:45pm.
