Boys Varsity Squash: Season Preview
The St. Luke’s Boys Varsity Squash team is looking to build on the success of last year. They’re off to a good start with all but two of the squad returning for the 2017-18 season.
The team has been working hard on the court and head coach Brian Mathias is extremely happy with how the preparation has gone so far: “The team looks great. We have four seniors and it looks like they will all be in the starting line up. Then we have some young guns filling the remaining places on the ladder.”
The Storm was very youthful last winter with no seniors on the roster. Mathias is hopeful that, with another year of experience under their belt, this year’s players will continue to improve: “We finished 5th in the FAA last season, we played in the C division in New England’s and the fifth division at nationals. I want us to hit at the same weight this year and that is definitely going to be challenging. However, the guys we have are another year older and another year wiser so I am expecting them to rise to the challenge.”
This year’s team will be captained by Logan Dilliberto ‘18 and Ajit Akole ‘18 with Ian Thomas ‘18 and Dennis Polyakov ‘18 rounding out the senior group. Mathias is confident the quartet can push the program forward: “Dennis will play in the number one slot again and has a wealth of experience. Logan, Ian and Ajit have been with us for few years now, so I am looking forward to seeing what they can do in their senior year.”
Mathias is also hopeful that the underclassman can shine on the court and believes the program is in a great position for the next few years: “A lot of those younger guys have played a good amount in the off season, so I am very happy with their development at this point. I feel like they are going to come back this year and hit the ground running.” He concluded: “We have a really solid group coming up with Liam Patty (‘21), Nick Holmes (‘21), Cameron Hill (‘21), Jack Conti (‘21) and Thomas Bailey (‘22) who will be with us, hopefully, for another three to four years. The future looks bright.”
