Boys Basketball Downs GFA On The Road

Dan Clarke
The St. Luke’s Boys Varsity Basketball team moved to 11-2 in FAA play with an impressive 81-69 road win against Greens Farms Academy on Thursday, February 8.

The Storm led by as many as 11 points in the first half before the Dragons clawed their way back to within two points as St. Luke’s took a slender 35-33 lead into halftime.

The game looked like it was going to be another epic, down-to-the-wire battle between the two FAA rivals, but the Storm had other ideas.

The visitors came out after the break with real purpose and stretched the lead to 55-44 with 9:31 to play in the game. Jonas Harper ‘18 (27) and Jackson Ryan ‘18 (17) led the Luke’s offense and a couple of clutch threes from Cole Bryant ‘20 (13) helped keep the Dragons at arm’s length.

GFA continued to press and a couple of back-to-back threes cut the deficit to seven points with 8:08 to play. However, they wouldn’t get any closer as the Storm continued to cause damage with its offensive game and strong inside defense.

St. Luke’s Head Coach Tony Newsom was pleased with his team’s performance: “All we’ve been talking about is defending. We want to make sure that we’re playing great defense and that guys are making contested two-point shots. I thought we did an excellent job of that tonight.”

St. Luke’s Boys Varsity Basketball is back in action on Saturday, February 10, against Rye Country Day School in another FAA contest. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:00pm at home.
