Senior Day Success For St. Luke's Basketball
The St. Luke’s Boys and Girls Varsity basketball teams honored their seniors this weekend and both came away with important victories against FAA rivals.
The Girls were matched up against Greenwich Academy on Friday, February 9, and moved to 8-0 in FAA league play with a comprehensive 77-44 win over the Gators.
Senior players Maya Klein, McKenna Frank, Bridget Dalton, Elizabeth Laub and Thaise Sudano were recognized before the game as well as senior managers Molly Tierney, Courteney Newman and Ali Ferris.
In a first half littered with fouls, the Storm struggled to get its offense going and with just under five minutes to play in the first half held a slender 16-12 lead.
Following a time-out, and some inspirational words from Coach Ward, St. Luke’s potent attack found some rhythm and the Storm extended the lead to 34-15 by the break.
In a much more free-flowing second period St. Luke’s continued to pull away from GA with Frank (22), Klein (19) and Sydney Cummings ‘19 (13) securing not only the win but the number one seed for the FAA tournament.
Boys Varsity Basketball hosted Rye Country Day School on Saturday, February 10, and improved to 10-2 in FAA play with a 74-67 triumph.
Seniors Jonas Harper, Jackson Ryan, Andrew Varoli, Jackson Selvala and John Wisdom were recognized for their contributions to the program which included 92 wins during their time with the team.
In a very open first half St. Luke’s threatened to pull away from the Wildcats opening up a 27-20 lead with six minutes to play. However, a very determined effort from the visitors kept the contest close and the Storm went into the interval with a 38-35 advantage.
Two big moments with just over eight minutes to play in the game gave St. Luke’s a 15-point lead, one from which the Wildcats couldn’t claw back. Cole Bryant ‘20 secured an and one before Andrew Varoli ‘18 made a huge three-pointer just moments later to make it 61-46.
Rye continued to push hard and cut the lead to six with just under three minutes remaining but the St. Luke’s seniors wouldn’t be denied as Varoli scored a team-high 26 points, Harper added 15, Selvala chipped in with 12, Ryan hit 10 and Wisdom tallied 4.
