Chevalier Shee? Mais Oui!
Last Friday night, several St. Luke’s faculty headed to the French Embassy in NYC to celebrate Upper School World Language Chair Jon Shee’s promotion to l’Ordre des Palmes académiques and being “knighted” as a chevalier. According to the American Society of French Academic Palms website, this award is given to people who “have rendered eminent service to French education and have contributed actively to the prestige of French culture.” The award dates back to Napoleon I who “created the palmes académiques as an honorary title to recognize members of the University in 1808...The academic palms is the oldest non-military French decoration.”
Shee was chosen to receive this recognition because of his work at St. Luke’s and as President of the CT chapter of the AATF (American Association of Teachers of French).
St. Luke’s Amber Berry, Sarah Blanton, Evan Downey, Kate Parker-Burgard, Sarah Westerberg, Beth Yavenditti and Cynthia Baden (along with former colleagues Guy Bailey and Kathy King) were all in attendance as he received this prestigious and honorable distinction.
