St. Luke's Scores High Tech Helmets

nbt

St. Luke’s Storm Football will be the first high school team in the Northeast to equip its Varsity and Junior Varsity teams with the VICIS ZERO1 helmet for the 2018 football season. The ZERO1 is the top-ranked helmet in the National Football League and National Football League Players Association helmet performance testing.

The ZERO1 is the most technologically advanced helmet on the market, designed to reduce impact forces with a highly engineered structure that differs from traditional football helmets. The ZERO1 has a deformable outer shell and a unique columnar layer designed to slow impact forces like a car bumper.

“The Vicis football helmet is a game changer for the St. Luke’s football family,” said St. Luke’s Head Football Coach Noel Thomas. “My number one concern is player safety. I couldn't be more impressed with what the VICIS scientists, neurosurgeons and engineers have designed.  I'm thankful to be a member of a community that is willing and able to blaze a trail to the safest brand of football possible.

St. Luke’s Athletic Director, Mike West, says the new helmets are part of a program known for innovation: “St. Luke’s has reinvented this game for our players. We’ve maintained what’s fantastic about this game, but we keep striving to minimize risks for our athletes.”

In 2016, Coach Thomas launched the Dartmouth Way at St. Luke’s. The program, based on the Dartmouth College Football method, uses a robot, called the Mobile Virtual Player (MVP), to reduce player injuries. “St. Luke’s is the only school in this area to have an MVP and we are the first in the Northeast to have the ZERO1 helmet,” said West. Both the ZERO1 helmets and the MVP were made possible by donations from St. Luke's families.

VICIS CEO and co-founder Dave Marver is working to bring the ZERO1’s breakthrough protective technology to high schools across the country, “We applaud Coach Thomas and the St. Luke’s football program for protecting their athletes,” said Marver. “We look forward to seeing Storm players elevate their game this season.”

VICIS is a Seattle-based company focused on sports protective technologies. Its inaugural product, the ZERO1 football helmet, launched in 2017 and was worn by players on 18 NFL teams. The helmet ranked first in 2017 NFL/NFLPA Helmet Performance testing and was named one of TIME Magazine’s 25 Best Inventions of 2017 with VICIS being one of Fast Company’s 2018 Most Innovative Companies in Sports. VICIS is funded and/or advised by several current and former NFL players and investors include spine and neurological surgeons.
