Walk-Off Homer Gives Storm Victory Over Cheshire Cats

Dan Clarke
The St. Luke’s Varsity Softball team won an epic encounter against Cheshire Academy on Tuesday, April 10 after a two-run walk-off homer from Maya Klein ‘18 earned a 7-6 decision.

The Storm knew they were in for a tough afternoon as they faced a team that was one of only two schools to inflict defeat on them last season.

Riley Page ‘19 started on the mound for St. Luke’s and pitched seven strong innings, allowing six runs on just six hits and striking out four.

The Fighting Cats blew the game open, scoring four in the top of the third inning, but St. Luke’s showed its offensive power to claw its way back into the game. Kendall Boege ‘19 got things started for the home team with an RBI in the bottom of the fourth before Emma Cropper ‘19 scored a two-run homer to cut the deficit to 3-4.

St. Luke’s would add one more run in the bottom of the fifth and sixth innings to take a 5-4 lead before Cheshire scored two in the top of the seventh.

Trailing 5-6 in the bottom of the seventh, Alli Ferris ‘18 earned a walk before Klein crushed a ball deep over center field to score the game-winning runs and give the Storm victory.

Klein said: “It’s really hard to describe how I felt in that moment. After losing to Cheshire last year, we really wanted this one. I was so excited that we won and that I could do my part for the team.”

With the win St. Luke’s Varsity Softball improves to 2-0 on the season. They face The Harvey School next at home on Saturday, April 14 at 3:30pm.
