Week of April 16-22

Softball

The Storm battled Rye Country Day School at home on Wednesday, April 18 and the team’s bats continued to be hot. SLS pulled out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning before blowing the game wide open with six runs in each the second and third innings.

Rye made a little noise in the fourth but ultimately fell short as the Storm clinched the 16-3 victory.

Emma Cropper ‘19 earned the win for St. Luke’s going five innings, allowing four runs on seven hits, striking out five and walking one.  Ali Ferris ’18, Courteney Newman ‘18, and Maya Klein ‘18 tallied multiple hits each and Riley Page ‘19 led the team with three RBI'S.

The team continued its fine form on Saturday, April 21 on the road at The Millbrook School.  Although the Mustangs scored three runs in the first inning, Page locked it down and went five innings, allowing four runs on four hits, striking out six and walking one.

Page and Maddy Sead ‘19 homered in the second inning and Cropper went deep in the fifth. Klein, Ferris, and Cropper had three hits apiece and Newman, Page and Sead added two each.  Page led the team in RBI's with three. Final score: 17-4

Next up: Varsity Softball travels to Hamden Hall on Monday, April 23 for a 4:30 game.


Baseball

on Saturday, April 21, St. Luke’s Varsity Baseball came back from a deficit three different times for a 6-5 victory over The Harvey School.  The Storm was consistently clutch with runners in scoring position as Ryan Neafsey ‘18, Oz Jensen ’19, Ryan Higgins ‘21, and Andrew Kurth ‘18 contributed big hits and key RBIs.  Jack Ellis ‘21 and Mack Lemkau ‘20 pitched well as they combined to mostly frustrate the powerful bats from the Harvey School. It was a great win for St. Luke’s on a beautiful day!
 
Next up: The Varsity Baseball team travels to Brunswick School on Tuesday, April 24 and King on Wednesday, April 25 before a home contest on Friday, April 27 against The Gunnery.

Girls Lacrosse
Hamden Hall Girls Varsity Lacrosse came to the Hilltop on Tuesday, April 17 ready to push the Storm.

The Hornets started out strong and didn’t let up the whole game. As the SLS parents were huddled together to keep warm, four of our girls on offensive penetrated HH’s tenacious defense and contributed to the tally for SLS.
Grace Kuehner ‘18 scored 4 goals, Olivia Schwartz ‘19 tossed in 3, Katie Barton ‘19 added one as did Ryan Weil ‘21.  Quinn Gregorich ‘20 had eight saves in the goal in the 9-14 loss.

Next Up: The Girls Varsity Lacrosse team hosts Holy Child School on Monday, April 23 at 4:30pm.


Boys Lacrosse

The St. Luke's Boys Varsity Lacrosse team faced an efficient and effective Rye Country Day team that resulted in a loss on home turf on Wednesday, April 18.  The Storm defense had their work cut out as the Wildcat offense dominated possession for most of the game. An extra-man goal by Christopher Besgen ‘18 at the end of the third quarter broke the 0-12 Rye shut out and opened the scoring for St. Luke's.  Two St. Luke's goals, scored by Thomas Besgen ‘20 and Wes Meyers ‘20, followed in the fourth for a 3-12 final score.
 
BVL hosted Kingswood Oxford on Saturday, April 21 and won an enthralling encounter 8-4.
 
The Storm dominated the first half and went into the break with a 4-0 lead thanks to goals from Brenden Whiteley ‘18, Jack Halsey ‘18 and two from Chris Besgen.
 
KO came out strong in the third period and cut the deficit to 4-3 before the Storm regrouped to finish the game in style. Further goals from Whiteley and Besgen gave the home team a well-deserved victory.
 
Next up: TheBoys Varsity Lacrosse team hosts Greens Farms Academy on Wednesday, April 25 before traveling to Brunswick School on Friday, April 27.

Boys Varsity Tennis
 
The Boys Varsity Tennis team had two matches this week, both versus Greens Farms Academy.  The first was a scrimmage rescheduled from earlier in the season on Wednesday, April 18. The Storm played six singles matches and three doubles, losing all but one match at #2 singles as Brian Peck ‘19 brought in the only victory for the team.
The rematch which counted towards the  FAA standings was on Saturday, April 21 at St. Luke’s. The Storm gave a good fight but ultimately fell to the Dragons again.  This time the score was 2-5 with great wins by Peck at #2 singles and by Max Lehnert ‘19 and James Adamini ‘20 at #1 doubles. Max and James won in a third-set tiebreaker. Another close match was played by Jack Briggs ‘21 and Dominic DeMarco ‘18 at #3 doubles.  They also went to a third-set tiebreaker but ultimately lost the match.
 
Next up: Boys Varsity Tennis will host King School on Tuesday, April 24 at 4:15.
 
Girls Varsity Tennis
 
The Girls Varsity Tennis team had its first FAA match of the season on Wednesday, April 18 versus Holy Child.  The girls continued their strong start to the season picking up an 8-0 win again. Tyleigh Zammitt ‘19 and Georgia Rosenberg ‘19 went to a third-set tiebreaker and were victorious allowing the Storm to sweep the match. There was strong play by all the girls and they hope to continue dominating as their season really kicks into full gear this week with three matches.
 
Next up: The Girls Varsity Tennis team looks to continue their success as they play Greenwich Academy at home on Monday, April 23 at 4:15 before hosting Millbrook School on Wednesday, April 25 and traveling to Rye Country Day School on Friday, April 27.
