SpringFest: Academics and the Arts in Full Bloom

V. Parker
Senior scholar presentations, theatre performances, art exhibitions, and poetry readings were all part of SpringFest 2018.
Academics and the arts were showcased on the Hilltop last week during SpringFest 2018. The Scholars Symposium kicked it off on Thursday evening with our Senior Scholars presenting findings from their in-depth, yearlong research in Classics, Global and STEM topics.

Friday was filled with theatre, visual arts, music, poetry, and prose. The Friday lineup of SpringFest events started with the Upper School Acting Class production of The Dream Projects. Each student took a dream and brought it to life through creative movements acted out with their classmates.

The acting presentation was followed by the Senior Solo Art Shows and Spring Art Exhibition Openings. St. Luke’s senior artists featured works by Meg Adams, Emma Castiglione, Bridget Dalton, Emma Duryea, Chloe Kekedjian, Maria Minuesa, Leo Van Munching, Matthew Murphy, Alexandra Schwartz, Isabelle Stone, Rebecca Taylor, and Lucia Wiggers. From photography to painting to pottery, there was an impressive display of talent. As the works were observed and discussed, English department faculty members Stephen Flachsbart and Ross James entertained everyone with live music. Students and faculty then recited poetry and prose they had written. These recitations and readings were bookended by songs performed by a few Upper School students.

It was then time to celebrate a former St. Luke’s artist during the Alumni Artistic Achievement Award. Kent Bloomer ‘53 was this year’s recipient for his decades of innovative work in architectural ornament and public sculptures.

Friday’s festivities continued with the St. Luke’s Theatre Company’s production of Five Women Wearing the Same Dress. Sarah Powless ‘18, Alexandra Schwartz ‘18, Harry Wyckoff ‘18, Katie Libman ‘19, Madison Sead ‘19, and Ali Vogel ‘20 played five bridesmaids (and one beau) who shared secrets and laugh’s on a friend’s wedding day. This talented troupe of actors did an encore performance on Saturday night which concluded SpringFest 2018.
