Seventy Years of Leadership on the Hilltop

Meg Paulson

Robert Salomon '55 has been a leader at St. Luke’s School for nearly 70 years. An avid volunteer and community advocate, Bob has served countless non-profit organizations in and around Stamford, CT, though only St. Luke’s School, can claim his roots.

Bob entered St. Luke’s School in 1951 as a 9th grader. During his time at St. Luke’s Bob served as Caduceus editor, football captain, and Student Council President.  He went on to Amherst College and upon graduation joined the US Trust Company of NY, eventually becoming their Chief Investment Officer.  He worked at Salomon Brothers through the 80s and early 90s and then founded STI Management, LLC with his wife Deborah. In the mid-90s he moved to Merrill Lynch as their Mutual Fund Director.

In 1971, Bob returned to the Hilltop to join St. Luke’s School’s newly formed Board of Trustees.  A for-profit institution from 1928-1971, St. Luke’s required an engaged and dynamic Board to see it through the transition to non-profit status.  Throughout that first decade, Bob served terms as Secretary, Vice-President and, from 1979-1985, as Chairman of the Board.

“For most of my adult life I have been involved with both investments and education.  For me, it’s the ideal combination.” –Bob Salomon ’55

Bob’s role at St. Luke’s goes far beyond that of most alumni and trustees. Not only have several of Bob’s children and grandchildren attended St. Luke’s, but Bob literally saved the school from filing for bankruptcy in the 1970s. Bob not only helped put the school on a sound financial footing, but he also helped usher in coeducation to St. Luke’s, led building projects including a new gymnasium (which is now the Middle School gym), and oversaw the appointment of several headmasters, including Mr. Whitcomb in 1980 who served as headmaster for 22 years.

And now, again, Bob has stepped forward as a leader in our community.
