The Cum Laude Society was founded in 1906 and modeled on Phi Beta Kappa at the collegiate level. Dr. Abram W. Harris of the Tome School in Maryland decided to recognize scholastic achievement of students in secondary schools. Seven schools were given founding charters in the organization, and more than 350 schools are charter members today. The motto of the society is Arete, Dike, Time—Excellence, Justice, Honor.
