5th Grade Trip to Lake George

From 5th Grade Department Chair Jane Olsen:

The Fifth Grade took its annual overnight adventure to upstate New York from April 25-27, following on their study of rivers and water sources. The trip began at Howe Caverns, where the students investigated the magical, labyrinthine, water-carved caves and took a boat ride on the underground river. Their guide extraordinaire, Sparky, explained the history and geology of the natural formations and gave them a thrilling moment of complete darkness on their boat ride. From there they traveled to Silver Bay YMCA Conference Center on Lake George, where they spent nights in comfy lodge rooms and days exploring the wooded lakefront campus and climbing nearby Inspiration Point for spectacular panoramic views of the lake and pristine forest extending all the way to Vermont. The highlight of the trip was an evening bonfire, where the fifth graders shared stories they had written about their “river families” in the Fifth Grade Exploration of the Ganges, the Amazon, and the Nile and enjoyed s’mores and kettle-roasted corn prepared on the fire.
