Week of September 17-23

Girls Soccer

The girls Varsity soccer team improved their record on Thursday, September 20th, with a 9-1 victory of Wooster. Goals were scored by Lea Panagiotidis (2), Caroline Lau (2), Ellie O’Meara (2), Ali Gall, Macy Owsley, and Julia Lombardo. Other major contributors on the field were Aidan Panian, Caitlin Neafsey, & Hannah Matthew. The strong field play combined with a solid performance by the goalkeepers Ashley Barton and Kiera Williams paved the way for the Storm’s victory.

The Storm followed Thursday’s victory with an impressive 3-1 win over FAA rival Greens Farms Academy on Saturday, September 22.

In an intense game, Lombardo opened the scoring for St. Luke’s before a second-half double from Panagiotidis secured the three points for the home team.

Next up: Girls Varsity Soccer travels to The Masters School (NY) on Wednesday, September 26 and Holy Child School on Saturday, September 29.

Field hockey

Varsity Field Hockey had a tough game on Thursday, September 20 as the team traveled to Rye Country Day School to play its sixth game of the season.

The Storm put up a great defense but couldn’t stop their opponents from scoring in a 0-6 reverse.

RCDS team had great stick skills and hit hard balls throughout the game which enabled them to out power the Storm.

Next up: Varsity Field Hockey hosts Greenwich Academy on Monday, September 24 and The King School on Wednesday, September 26.

Football

Despite a valiant effort, St. Luke’s Varsity Football fell for the first time this season, 6-26, to a talented Hamden Hall team to move to 2-1 on the season.

The Storm offense struggled to move the ball on the ground all day as the Hornets dominated the line of scrimmage.  St. Luke’s managed only two big offensive plays all day, a 22-yard pass from Everett Andersen ’22 to Kenny Soares ’21 and a 54-yard bomb from Soares to Seth Kim ’19.

Despite being on the field much of the game, the Storm defense made the high-powered Hornets offense work hard for yards all afternoon.  The Hornets scored three times on the Storm defense, all coming on big plays, with the fourth score coming as a result of a fumble by the Storm offense.

Showing great character and toughness St. Luke’s twice stopped two-point conversion attempts, once when Koy Price ‘21 and Hayden Critchell ’21 teamed up to stop the Hamden runner just short of the goal line and once when Austin Andersen ’21 intercepted a trick pass.

The St. Luke’s defense was also responsible for the only Storm touchdown of the day when in the fourth quarter Price scooped up a Hornets fumble and rumbled 52 yards for a score.

One other bright spot was the kicking of Andrew Lau ‘20 who averaged more than 30 yards on his six punts with great hang time which prevented the Hornets from gaining any return yardage.

Next up: The Storm hit the road again next week to take on Long Island Lutheran in Brookville, NY on Saturday, September 29.
