Week of October 1-7

Boys Soccer

Boys Varsity Soccer has had a great start to the season so far and is currently 5-2.

The Storm came into this week on the back of two tough FAA games last week.  The great result of last week was the 1-0 win over reigning FAA Champions, Hopkins, on 9/26, after a good goal from CJ Woodberry ’19. This allowed St. Luke’s to play a defensive game which served them well, utilizing two well-organized lines of defense to shut Hopkins out.

Unfortunately, the game saw a couple of injuries so the FAA game against King on 9/28 was a little tougher than hoped and resulted in a 3-1 loss, with the only goal being scored by Julian Velez ’20.

This week was a lighter week with only one game against Harvey School on 10/4. Just as well as both striker, Phil Platek ‘20 and midfielder Max Mitchell ‘20 were still nursing injuries from the Hopkins game.

The Harvey game started slowly for the Storm and they were trailing 1-0 at the half, despite several attempts on goal. The boys came back strong in the second half (as they often do) and finished with a 3-1 win. Bear Crystal ’20, who moved up from defense to play in a holding midfield position in the second half due to our injured forwards, scored two goals to give the Storm a 2-1 lead. His first was a good goal from the edge of the box before he added one from the penalty spot. Jake Kavan ‘21 then sealed the deal with a chip over the goalkeeper’s head in the late stages of the game. A nice comeback for the lads!

Next up: This week Boys Varsity Soccer has two more important FAA games. Thursday, Oct 11 the team travels to Hamden Hall and Saturday,  Oct 13 will see our Homecoming game against The Masters School (NY).

Football

Wyoming Seminary (PA) 43 – St. Luke’s Football 6

St. Luke’s Varsity football traveled three hours to Kingston, PA for its Saturday night matchup with Wyoming Seminary only to be overmatched from the outset in a lopsided 43-6 loss.

Stocked with Seniors and Post-graduate players on both sides of the ball, the Seminarians had the enormous natural advantages of size, strength, and maturity over the Storm. Starting only three Seniors on offense and defense and relying heavily on offensive and defensive lines comprised entirely of Juniors, and an offensive backfield including a Sophomore and a Freshman, the Storm were quite simply outgunned.

The Seminarians returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown and rolled to a 35-0 halftime lead, helped in part by an incorrect interpretation of offsetting penalties that allowed a long scoring play with five seconds remaining in the half to stand despite an illegal block in the back.

Undaunted by an insurmountable deficit, the Storm dug deep and did not surrender in the second half holding their opponents to a single score.  The lone highlight of the game for the Storm came late in the second half when Kenny Soares ’21, ran for a touchdown, the only score of the day for the visitors.

Field Hockey

Varsity Field hockey played its best game yet against Wilbraham & Monson Academy on Wednesday, October 3. The girls played 100% the entire game with Lucy Elhers ‘20 scoring the first goal for the storm.  Madden Hart ‘22 and Katherine Pellegrino ‘19 each added another goal to beat the Titans 3-1.

The Storm put up a great defensive performance with Allie Riley ‘20 earning the game ball from the coaches. Coach Seeley emailed after the game “the girls got their groove back!”

Unfortunately, that grove was off when they squared up against the Hackley School on Friday.  The opponents scored right off the first whistle making the next hour an upward battle for the Storm. They couldn’t find a way back into the match and finished up losing 0-3.

Next up: Varsity Field Hockey has a busy week with three games on Wednesday at Kingswood Oxford, Thursday at home vs Kennedy Catholic and Saturday at home against Miss Porters.

Girl Varsity Soccer

The Girls Varsity Soccer team continued its perfect start to the season with an impressive 4-1 win over FAA rivals Sacred Heart on Friday, October 5.

After Tuesday’s contest with Rye Country Day School was postponed due to thunderstorms, GVS moved to 5-0 on the season and 4-0 in FAA play.

Goals from Lea Panagiotidis ‘20, Julia Lombardo ‘21, Ali Gall ‘22, and Caroline Lau ‘22 gave the Storm a 4-0 lead early in the second half before Sacred Heart hit back with one of their own.

The Storm controlled the game for large periods with excellent performances from Sydney Napolitano ‘19, Ryan Weil ‘21, Jackie Thompson ‘20, Elli O’Meara ‘22, and Lilly Tencic ‘20. Ashley Barton ‘22 had another solid outing in goal making seven saves for the Storm.
