Boys Soccer Downs GFA In Final FAA Game

Dan Clarke
Boys Varsity Soccer completed its FAA schedule on Tuesday, October 16, with a 1-0 win over Greens Farms Academy.

The only goal of the game was scored by Junior Captain Phil Platek in the 24th minute. Platek received a pass from Jake Kavan ‘21 before slotting into the bottom corner beyond the goalkeeper's reach.

The Storm was playing without defensive stalwart Des Pratt ‘21 due to illness but some outstanding performances from Captain Bear Crystal ‘20, Lars Ernberg ‘20 and Thomas Besgen ‘20 restricted the Dragons offensive threat. St. Luke’s was guilty of missing a couple of good opportunities in the second half to make the game safe, but a couple of big saves from Mac Lemkau ‘20 preserved the shutout for the home team.

The win sees the Storm improve to 7-2-1 on the season and 4-1-1 in the FAA league. St. Luke’s is now waiting for other teams to complete their schedules to see where they finish in the final standings. The team is guaranteed at least second place, and a home game in the postseason tournament, but could still finish in first if results go the Storm’s way.

Head Coach Ryan Fairhurst is hoping his team has done enough to clinch the league title. “I was very happy with the result and the performance against GFA. We moved the ball very well, were calm in possession and incisive when needed,” said Fairhurst. “We should have scored another goal or two to put the game to bed, and once we add some ruthlessness to our game we will reach that next level. With this result, we achieved our target of a top-two finish, and now we will look to reach our next one, the FAA tournament final.”
