Acclaimed Teen Psychologist Dr. Lisa Damour Visits St. Luke’s

St. Luke’s hosted psychologist Dr. Lisa Damour on Wednesday, October 17. Damour is a regular contributor to The New York Times and CBS News. Her book, Untangled: Guiding Teenage Girls Through the Seven Transitions into Adulthood, was an instant New York Times best-seller.

Damour headlined a day and evening filled with insights and information for adolescents and the grownups in their lives.

During student assemblies, Damour addressed topics such as stress and conflict. She actively engaged students, encouraging them to share their imagined “worst day ever” and getting them to brainstorm about coping mechanisms or “recovery” strategies, in Damour’s language.

Damour spoke with faculty before school and with parents at an evening event. For both groups, she emphasized the tremendous rate of change that takes place in teens as they head into adulthood. She pointed out that what can appear to be erratic, frustrating, and confusing behavior is often just a normal part of growing up.

Head of Upper School Liz Perry reflected on Damour’s visit: “Dr. Damour connected with each audience. Parents, students and teachers all responded to her. Each group had a sea of heads all nodding in recognition as she talked through different scenarios that face teens as well as those who parent and teach them.”

The event was sponsored by St. Luke’s Parents' Association and Amber Berry, Head of Middle School, and Liz Perry Head of Upper School.
