Storm Football Tames Capital Prep Sharks

Dan Clarke
The St. Luke’s Varsity Football team mounted a spirited comeback in the fourth quarter to win 14-12 against Capital Preparatory on Friday, October 26.

The victory sees the Storm improve to 5-2 for the season following two late touchdowns from Shamond Moore ’20. St. Luke’s trailed the Sharks 0-6 for much of the game before a seven-yard touchdown run by Moore and an extra point by Andrew Lau ’20 early in the fourth quarter gave the home side the lead.

The Sharks took the advantage again with 6:28 to play in the game after a 58-yard run, making the Storm pay for a forced fumble. However, the St. Luke’s defense stopped the two-point conversion in what turned out to be a key play.

St. Luke’s got the ball back on their own 23-yard line but marched down the field, completing a 77-yard drive with a five-yard touchdown run by Moore with just 2:05 to play in the game. The drive had been kept alive in dramatic fashion when, on fourth and sixth, Kenny Soares ‘21 managed to scramble for a first down despite extreme pressure from the Sharks defense. Lau converted the extra point to give St. Luke’s a 14-12 lead.

The Storm defense then held firm against a team that had put 46 points past them last season. Noah Bailey ’19, Christian Haas ’20, and Austin Andersen ’21 all finished the game with ten tackles each, with Jordan Robinson ‘20 making nine of his own in a remarkable defensive display.

St. Luke’s faces Pennington High School (NJ) on Saturday, November 3, before completing its regular season schedule with a home game against The King School on Saturday, November 10. Head Coach Noel Thomas looks forward to seeing what his team can achieve during the last few weeks of the season. “I'm extremely pleased with how our football family is performing right now," he said. "We are giving maximum effort in all phases. The Capital Prep game was a critical win for us. We are primed for an exciting finish to our season.”
