Week of October 29-November 4

Boys Soccer

Boys Varsity Soccer finished the week strong with an exciting game against Christian Heritage School on Friday, November 2. It was also Boys Varsity Soccer Senior Day and it could not have been a more thrilling game with all four Seniors involved.

Kenny Lam made some great saves in goal, while CJ Woodberry attacked the net at the other end. Meanwhile, with Jack Neafsey in defense and Chris Ayoub racing up and down the wing, the Seniors all played their part in this thriller.

The game could have gone either way and ended in a respectable 1-1 tie.

St. Luke’s took the lead before halftime with an impressive goal from Jake Kavan (’21) assisted by Phil Platek (’20). Christian Heritage came back in the second half to equalize in a finish reminiscent of last year’s matchup which also ended in a tie.

The team was ready for a fresh start in November, having had a difficult final week in October with New England losses against Storm King (1-2) and Cheshire Academy (0-3).

The Storm now looks to build on the November momentum from their second place finish in the FAA League this season.

St. Luke’s strong finish puts the team in position for an exciting semi-final against either Hamden Hall or Greens Farms Academy on Thursday, November 8, at 1.30pm. The game is home so please come down to the 2015 Field and support the boys! Go Storm!

Football

Despite having their most prolific offensive day of the season in total yards and in points scored, the St. Luke’s Varsity football team fell 46-34 to the Pennington School on Saturday night in Pennington, NJ.

While the offense was consistently able to move the ball, the real story of the game was turnovers.  The Storm fumbled seven times, leading to four turnovers. Two of those fumbles were in the final minute before halftime and both led directly to Pennington touchdowns, which turned a manageable 19-14 deficit into a gaping 32-14 hole at the midway point.
The Storm closed to within 32-27 as the offense began to click in the third quarter, but the team was bedeviled again by sloppy defense and fumbles.  Pennington put the game away late in the fourth quarter four plays after another Storm fumble turned the ball over at the St. Luke’s 31-yard line.

Taking advantage of an enormous size advantage on the offensive line, the Storm racked up 301 yards rushing on just 48 carries, 6.3 yards per attempt, paced by Chandler Greene ’19 who churned out 143 yards on 20 carries with three touchdowns.  Michael Thompson ’20 chipped in on the offensive side with two passing receptions for 57 yards.

Volleyball

It was a big day for St. Luke's Varsity Volleyball on Monday, September 29 with a win over Hamden Hall on Senior Day. St. Luke's took the match in three sets. All players contributed hugely to the win, with a special shout out to Maddie Harris ‘19 for scoring heavily with service points.

St. Luke's couldn't hold on to take the win at Sacred Heart on Tuesday, September 30 despite the consistent serving from Elyse Kim ‘20 and Sydney Cummings ‘19. Riley Page ‘19 had an outstanding game with some huge blocks for the Storm.

St. Luke’s took to the court for the third time in four days on Thursday, November 1 in a close match at Wooster School going to five sets. Wooster took the first two sets 25-21, 25-20 and St. Luke's won the next two 25-22, 25-17. The fifth set ended with St. Luke's taking the loss 15-10.

Girls Varsity Soccer

The Girls Varsity soccer team took its 11-0 record on the road to face Greenwich Academy needing a win or a tie to secure the conference regular season title and the top seed in the tournament. It was an extremely tough game but the Storm came away with a 2-2 tie and will now have home field advantage throughout the tournament. St. Luke’s took the early lead when Lilly Tencic ‘20 received a cross in the box and put the ball nicely in the back of the net. GA responded with a goal from Tessa Brooks to tie the score at 1-1. St. Luke’s came back strong to take a 2-1 lead when Ali Gall ‘22 scored from just outside the left side of the box early in the second half. Behind 2-1, GA’s Tessa Brooks scored her second goal of the game to tie the score at 2-2 (final score). St. Luke’s Caroline Lau ‘22 assisted on both goals.

The Girls Varsity Soccer team moved to 12-0-1 for the year on Saturday, November 3 with a 2-0 win over the Canterbury School. Goals from Julia Lombardo ‘21 and Aidan Panian ‘23 were enough to secure victory over a tenacious Canterbury team.
