A Storm Season Review

Dan Clarke
As the Fall season comes to a close we take a look back on what was another successful campaign for all six of our varsity sports.

Varsity Football finished the season 5-4 after some impressive victories against Rye Country Day, Albany Academy, Long Island Lutheran, Hopkins School, and Capital Preparatory Magnet School.

Everett Andersen ‘22 led the team in passing yards with 363 and four touchdowns. Chandler Greene ‘19 had 369 rushing yards and five TD’s while Kenny Soares ‘21 led the team in receiving with 11 receptions for 145 yards and 2 touchdowns.

On the defensive side, Austin Andersen ‘21 led the team with 88 tackles including nine for a loss as well as two interceptions and Soares had five sacks on the season.

The team held its annual banquet on Monday, November 12 with Soares winning the Offensive Player of the Year and Austin Andersen picking up the Defensive Player of the Year. Jordan Robinson ‘20 received the Offensive Lineman of the Year award and Christian Haas ‘20 was honored as the Defensive Lineman of the Year. The Junior Varsity Player of the Year award went to Eddie Boris ‘21.

The Momma Thomas Award, which is given to the player who demonstrates supreme character, maximum effort, humility, and love throughout the season was awarded to Jack Durvasula ‘20.

The final award of the night was the Pat Thomas Award. This is presented each year to a player who has excelled in sportsmanship, leadership, academic proficiency, and school spirit and was given to senior captain Seth Kim.

The Varsity Field Hockey team finished its first season under Head Coach Seeley Fancher with six wins, narrowly missing out on the FAA postseason. A number of impressive performances throughout the fall included wins over Hopkins School, The Masters School (NY), Wilbraham and Monson Academy and Cheshire Academy.

Emma Cropper ‘19 and Kendall Boege ‘19 both had stellar seasons for the Storm and were rewarded for their outstanding play by being selected to the Western New England Preparatory School Field Hockey Association All-Star team.

In the team awards, Cropper was voted Most Valuable Player for a number of standout performances in the Storm goal. Andrea DiTeodoro ‘22 picked up The Rookie of the Year award for her excellent season and recognition for Most Improved Player went to Anna Bradley ‘22. The final team award was the Storm Player Award which is given to the player who embodies SLS Field Hockey and the program’s values. Boege was selected for this award following another fantastic fall on the field.

Cross Country enjoyed another fine season despite the wet weather this fall. The Varsity team competed in three FAA races as well as The Wilton Invitational, The South Kent Invitational and the FAA Championship meet.

The highlight of the season was undoubtedly the third FAA meet when many of the squad smashed their personal best times in perfect running condition. Jackson Hart ‘19 finished 26th overall with a time of 19:48 and Carolina Warneryd ‘19 came in 15th overall in the girls’ race with a time of 22:46.

The team wrapped up the season by honoring the two senior captains Christian Pizzarelli and Warneryd with a team lunch on Tuesday, November 13 when they distributed the annual paper plate awards.

Varsity Volleyball had another excellent season despite graduating a number of key players from last year’s squad.

Coaches Abby Abbott and Gareth Minyard guided the team to victories against Hamden Hall, Harvey School, Canterbury School, Westover School, and EF Academy. The team qualified for the FAA tournament where they were defeated by the #1 seed Greenwich Academy. The young squad was also selected to play in the New England Class C tournament where they fought hard against the #1 seed King School on Wednesday, November 14 but just fell short.

Harper Boege '20, Elyse Kim '21, and Karey Balkind '22 were selected to participate in the NEPSGVA Conference All-Star Tournament on Sunday, November 4 as a reward for their fine play over the course of the season.

Boys Varsity Soccer had one of its best seasons for many years finishing second in the FAA regular season and finishing runners-up in the FAA tournament after a tough loss in the final against The Hopkins School.

The team also qualified for the New England Class C tournament where they unfortunately lost to the number #3 seed Concord Academy on Wednesday, November 14.

Bear Crystal ‘20 and Phil Platek ‘20 were rewarded for their performances on the pitch by being selected for the Western New England Preparatory School Soccer Association All-Star team. The dynamic duo played in the Class C All-Star game, which was also coached by Head Coach Ryan Fairhurst on Sunday, November 11.

Girls Varsity Soccer also enjoyed another fantastic campaign as they completed an undefeated regular season 13-0-1 on the way to picking up another FAA league title.

The Storm was the #1 seed for the FAA tournament but dropped its first game of the season in the semi-final to Greens Farms Academy.

GVS was given the #2 seed in the New England Class C tournament beating the Canterbury School 4-3 in overtime on Wednesday, November 14. St. Luke’s will now face #3 seed The MacDuffie School on Saturday, November 17 in the semifinal.

Captains Sydney Napolitano ‘19 and Lea Panagiotidis ‘20, as well as Jackie Thompson ‘20, were selected for the Western New England Preparatory School Soccer Association All-Star team for their terrific performances over the course of the season.
