Model UN Team Takes on the Big Apple

From Model United Nations Advisor Abby Abbott:

St. Luke’s Model United Nations team kicked off its season with a tournament at New York University. The conference theme was "empires," which led to some interesting fictional and historical committees including The Galactic Empire (Star Wars), Imperial Rome, The Republic of Gilead (The Handmaid’s Tale), and the Italian Mafia. Along with these creative committees, students participated in the International Criminal Court of Justice, Economic and Finance Committee, Disarmament and International Security Committee, and the Social, Political, and Decolonization Committee (representing Uganda).

In addition to attending regular committee sessions, our students spent a morning at the Tenement Museum on the Lower East Side. They were excited to learn about 19th and 20th century immigration and enjoyed the Shop Life tour, which chronicles the changing landscape of a first-floor storefront that housed a German beer tavern, a kosher butcher, and a women's clothing shop.

Our team is looking forward to the next tournament at the University of Pennsylvania, January 31–February 3, 2019.

St. Luke’s Model UN participants included: Aarit Bhatnagar, Sarah Bryant, Jack Conti, Aidan Gunn, Ellie Haljun, Alex Hazlin, Lucas Manocherian, Evan Panagaes, Sierra Taylor, Michael Thompson, Marco Volpitta, Chris Walsh, and Carolina Warneryd.
