MS Artwork of the Week: Josie DeMarco '23

Haley Wulfman
Josie began in a familiar space--with pencil, observing a real lily flower. Some recent explorations with dip pens and ink compelled her to continue her work on this piece in this medium. Knowing that drawing ink can be applied with brushes too, after rendering much of the composition in line, Josie opted to express the blueness of the sky she invisioned by applying vivid blue ink with a brush.

Maybe you can relate to this--the feeling of having taken a significant step and realizing it just is not right. Josie looked at that bright blue, and it felt wrong.

She could have abandoned the piece here and all the work she'd done on it. After all, it's difficult to cover up a dark color of ink with another color. But she realized she could look to other materials, and with some carefully applied white acrylic paint, Josie realized--white over blue ink creates a beautiful light blue!

Congratulations to Josie—for her delightful artwork, and for the dedication and bravery which led her there.
