Ladies and Gentlemen...Blues Band!

VGP
It’s not every day you see students madly jamming with their teachers. Somehow the magic of Blues Band erases roles and barriers, and leaves room for little else but music. Every year, the entire school looks forward to this distinctly St. Luke’s event.

Blues Band began almost thirty years ago and has evolved into a semester-long after school activity that brings together a unique group of musicians each year. Students from grades 5-12 join in with faculty and staff to prepare for shows that highlight the group's deep pool of vocal and instrumental talents.

Upper School band teacher Peter Valera gracefully accepted the passed baton from the recently retired Bob Leinbach. Valera worked closely with new Middle School band teacher Maggie Lauer, who brought professional flutist skills to the stage. Lauer had heard about Blues Band but had to experience it to understand its impact: “I feel so lucky to have been a part of this—both as a teacher and a musician. The energy and comradery from the audience and the musicians are unmatched from any other school that I’ve worked at. Every single person I met during the interview process commented on how Blues Band was their favorite day of the school year, and now, I have to say that it’s probably one of mine too. ”

A true highlight of this year’s Blues Band was guest performances by Blues Band creator Mark “Mad Dog” Bisson and Leinbach. View the 2018 St. Luke’s Blues Band photo gallery, video highlights, and complete concert video.
