Varsity Hockey Downs King in OT

Daniel Clarke
The St. Luke’s Varsity Hockey team enjoyed an incredible overtime win against King School on Wednesday, January 16 on the back of captain CJ Woodberry’s winner with just 0.01 seconds remaining on the clock.

The dramatic late goal capped off a remarkable comeback from the Storm who trailed 1-3 after the second period at Stamford Twin Rinks. George Foster ‘23 pulled a goal back for St. Luke’s with 12:57 to play in regulation and the visitors continued to pepper the Vikings goalkeeper who finished the game with 44 saves.

When King killed two back-to-back power plays late in the game it looked like it wasn't going to be St. Luke’s day. However, after calling a timeout with 2:33 to go, the Storm pulled Andres Falcon ‘19 from the goal in search of the equalizer. The gutsy move paid dividends as Sam Boston ‘20 found the back of the net with a low-stinging effort with 1:33 remaining. Falcon would quickly return to his duties in the cage and was called upon late making two of his 25 saves as the clock ran down.

With the score at 3-3 the teams entered an additional five minutes of OT. Both schools had opportunities to win the game before captain Jack Neafsey ‘19 capitalized on a slip by a Viking's defensemen to fire a shot on goal that Woodberry turned in on a rebound.

The goal sparked wild celebrations from the team, coaches, and fans who had made the short trip to watch the contest. Woodberry was thrilled after the result: “It was an incredible finish to the game. This team never gives up and that was clear today with the way we came back from being down 1-3. This win is awesome for us and shows we can compete with anyone within the FAA.”

The win sees St. Luke’s improve to 2-2 in FAA play and 5-3 overall.

Next up: The puck squad is back in action on Wednesday, January 23 when it travels to The Harvey School for a 3:45pm game.
