Kurth Starts Season Strong For St. Luke's Ski Team

Daniel Clarke
Phoebe Kurth ‘20 narrowly missed out on winning her first ski race of the year on Wednesday, January 16, at Mount Southington. The two-time All-State skier demonstrated remarkable racing skills finishing just 0.53 seconds behind Wilton’s Kira Howard.

Kurth had two stellar runs, coming in second out of a field of 128 racers with a combined time of 46.44 seconds. Teammates Ellie Lyon ‘22 (28th), Kirsten Pastore ‘19 (29th), Harper Boege ‘20 (32nd), Claiborne Beurle ‘23 (38th) and Sarah Volpitta ‘23 (85th) helped the Storm team finish fifth overall, its best finish ever.

Kurth followed that up with a third-place finish in the team’s third race of the year on Wednesday, January 23. The New Canaan resident finished just 0.34 seconds behind first-placed Lauren Harris of Weston High School and 0.08 seconds behind second-placed Emma Nelson, also of Weston.

The Junior had a combined time of 46.12 seconds with Ellie Lyon finishing in 27th place with a time of 50.99 seconds.

Kurth is looking to make the State team again this season and has started in top form. Head Coach Chris Phelps has been extremely impressed with what he has seen so far: “She is just fun to watch because of her grace and speed on the hill.  What amazes me, even more, is her consistent humility and competitive streak, while fighting to be a top dog. She not only cheers her teammates on but also the girls she is competing against that she knows from racing in Vermont. She is just fun all around.”
