St. Luke’s J-Term 2019: Changing the World Piece by Piece

NBT
The fifth anniversary of St. Luke’s J-Term was marked by its latest iteration: Changing the World Piece by Piece. Each year since this signature program began, ninth grade students step out of their regular classes and routine to spend a week immersed in collaborative, project-based learning.

Teams come together around a real-world problem and brainstorm how to offer support, solutions, and education around the issue. This year’s teams worked on topics as timely and daunting as racism, unemployment, human trafficking, and gun violence. Students work in groups and begin a learning journey that may include interviews with experts, visits to relevant off-campus sites, and an extensive dive into research around their topic.

Every year, J-Term concludes with a Showcase where students set up exhibits and work as a team to teach visiting peers, faculty and parents about their issues and share ideas. According to Head of Upper School Liz Perry: “Our students’ curiosity, open-mindedness, and capacity for reflection impress us more each year. It’s an incredible transformation—the best of what school can be.”
