Girls Varsity Basketball Remain Perfect in FAA
St. Luke’s Girls Varsity Basketball navigated a tough week with aplomb to improve to 16-1 overall and remain unbeaten in FAA league play, with wins over Masters School and Sacred Heart.
The Storm traveled to Dobbs Ferry on Tuesday, January 29, to take on the Panthers, who also boasted a perfect record in conference play. In an enthralling contest, St. Luke’s managed to pull away from the host team late in the game to secure a 71-61 win. Caroline Lau ‘22 top-scored for the Storm with 23 points, including a huge three-pointer late in the game. Janelle Johnson ‘20 added 17 points, all in the second half of the game, Kiera Williams ‘22 put up 8 and, Sydney Cummings ‘19 chipped in with 7 points.
St. Luke’s hit the road again on Thursday, January 31, as they traveled to Sacred Heart Greenwich. The Sacred Heart Tigers were another unbeaten FAA rival, having won their opening six league games, but the Storm took control early and strolled to a 73-50 victory. Lau again led the way for GVBB with 22 points, Johnson hit 17, and Lexi Watson ‘21 chipped in with 10.
Head Coach Matt Ward was thrilled for his team to extend its winning run to 10 games: “Ever since the Greens Farms Academy game in early January we have been a different team. Executing offensively, buying in to playing team defense and getting stops, and having fun. We haven’t just talked about getting better, our kids have put in the effort to do that. Winning is a byproduct of that effort.”
