MS Artwork of the Week: Kiara Copeland '26

Haley Wulfman
When poet Andrew Green visited the 5th grade art classes a few months ago, Kiara Copeland seized the opportunity to explore how she might use chalk pastel to respond to his poems.

After an original exploration of planets in outer space, she continued to create these two pieces. In her second piece showing outer space, she applied a layer of black acrylic paint to her paper, which allowed the chalk to move around more freely, and also for the colors of the chalk to stand out with great contrast (the blazing red appears truly on fire!). In her third piece, halfway between abstract and representational, colors and shapes explode from a sky-like space above two silhouette figures down below.

Congratulations to Kiara on her use of chalk pastel in these two wonderful works!
