Kurth Qualifies For Team CT

Daniel Clarke
Congratulations to Phoebe Kurth ‘20, who qualified for the Connecticut Ski Team for the third consecutive year, after finishing ninth overall in the CT Shootouts.

Every year, the top ski racers from the Connecticut Interscholastic Ski League (CISL) compete in a two-part race to earn a position on Team Connecticut.

The first race is a Giant Slalom, with the top 30 boys and girls progressing to the Slalom race. The top 12 boys and girls from that race earn the opportunity to represent the state team at the Eastern State Ski Championships at Attitash Mountain Ski Area, Bartlett, N.H., between March 7-10, 2019.

Kurth finished ninth in the Giant Slalom event on Monday, January, 28, at Mount Southington and followed that up with a fifth-placed finish in the slalom race on Monday, February, 4.

The New Canaan resident has been in fine form this season with a second-place finish, a third-place finish, and two fifth-place finishes from her four races for the St. Luke’s Ski Team. The junior attributes her success to the hard work she has been putting in both on and off the mountain: “I have had a real focus on improving my strength this year to help with my speed down the mountain. I have been doing a lot of lifting, but I also train every weekend up at Stratton Mountain in Vermont, which has really helped when coming back to Mount Southington.”

When asked about her achievement of making the state team for the third straight year, Kurth remained humble: “It’s a real honor to be part of this team. I know a number of the other girls from competing against them both in CISL and races in Vermont, so it will be fun to be on the same team as them for Team CT.”

The four-day event consists of training days on Thursday, March 7, and Friday, March 8, a giant slalom race on Saturday, March 9, and a slalom race on March 10. Team CT will be competing against 12 other states, including Maine, New Hampshire, and Wisconsin.
