St. Luke's Squash Nationals Recap

Daniel Clarke
Both the St. Luke’s Boys and Girls Squash teams returned from the 2019 Head U.S. High School Team Squash Championships with a 2-2 record after their four matches.

The Varsity Boys team were given a tough seeding in Division VII but nearly caused an upset in the opening round against Brookline High School (MA). Thomas Arnold ‘22 took a 2-0 lead in the deciding match, but his opponent overcame a slow start and came back to win 3-2, to give Brookline an overall 4-3 win.

St. Luke’s responded well to the disappointment by winning the next two matches comfortably. The Storm defeated The Park School (MD) by a score of 6-1 and Friends Academy (NY) 7-0. St. Luke’s was then pitted against Wakefield School (VA) in another contest that went down to the wire. Peter Cioffi ‘23 split the first two games of the deciding match but ultimately fell 1-3 in a hard-fought battle.

The loss to Wakefield placed St. Luke’s 10th overall in its division, but Head Coach Brian Mathias was pleased with his team’s effort: “Considering ninth grade is the average grade level of our team, I thought the boys had a great weekend. Playing in this tournament will give them valuable experience to build on for the future.”

The St. Luke’s Girls team was also given a tough draw in Division III, facing the number one seed Bryn Mawr Academy (PA) in the first round. The Storm put up a valiant fight with a number of close matches but ultimately fell 2-5.

GVS dropped its second match against Loomis Chaffe School (CT) before winning its last two contests against The Potomac School (VA) and Berkshire School (MA), both by a score of 4-3.

The two wins resulted in St. Luke’s finishing 13th in its division and 49th overall. Head Coach Lucia Mathias was thrilled with her team: “I was very happy with the girls at Nationals this weekend. We gave the number one seed a good battle, and the girls put up an incredible fight. They stayed positive and aggressive the whole time.”
